Having "done South America" and travelled to North America, Europe, Asia and Africa in the past, the only continent eluding me was Oceania (Antarctica doesn't count). So back in mid-November, with very little knowledge of where I wanted to go and a foolish ignorance of just how vast this continent is, I bought a flight from London to New Zealand.
Two days into 2023, I packed up my bag and left a cold England for the distinctly warmer climes of South America. Having travelled for 7 months with Remote Year back in 2019, I wanted to get back to exploring the world and compare the benefits and challenges of travelling by myself vs. with travel companies.
One of my main ambitions while travelling - OK, probably the biggest aim - is to try and watch football in the new countries I visit. And I got my first taste of Italian football as I went to see Palermo v Pisa.
My European travels were in full flow, having reached Sicily. I was now preparing for my first full week in Europe as I began working as a digital nomad in Palermo.
It was time to get on a plane for the first time in quite some time and experience some unseasonably hot weather as I flew from Amsterdam to Palermo.
But now, after 2.5 years living in England, and after a brief flirtation with working for a company full-time, I decided that was no longer for me and the time was right to get back on the travel horse.
I've been working freelance again for around two months, picked up some of my former clients and won a couple of new ones, which is really exciting. But it seems pretty pointless to be doing that in the UK, which I did during lockdown and during my time in Margate.
Four months ago, I made the decision to leave a relatively comfortable, well-paid and enjoyable job in London to become a freelance, remote, digital nomad. T
